Job Description

Are you a technician looking for a challenging professional experience to further your career?  If so, joining CERN’s TTE programme may very well give you that challenge.  This position as an Electrotechnician for CERN Power Network is part of our prestigious TTE programme. 

The Electrical Engineering (EL) group is responsible for the CERN electrical distribution network from 400kV to 400/230V. Its main missions are to operate, maintain, extend and renovate the network. The group is also in charge of making modifications and extensions to the network as required by new projects, in terms of project studies, equipment procurement, installation, supervision and commissioning.

Functions

The EN-EL-EIC section is responsible for the management of all installation and commissioning activities related to electrical projects and works undertaken within the group.

After a period of training on the field, as an Electrician in the EIC Section, you will actively participate - with the aid and supervision of experienced colleagues - in the development, upgrade and renovation of the low-voltage and high voltage power network for the CERN accelerators and related activities. This will involve:

• Verify the technical files and calculations prepared by the project leaders prior to their execution by the contractors.


• Follow-up the Contractors’ activities on site.


• Perform Site Acceptance Tests of the LV and HV power distribution systems.


• Organize and follow up safety inspection meetings.


• Verify that work undertaken by contractors fully complies with safety rules, quality requirements, technical specifications and general requirements.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

• You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (home.cern/about/member-states);


• You have a Technical Diploma in industrial electricity or electrical engineering (e.g. electrical engineering technician) or related fields (careers.cern/ttediplomas), and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;


• If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;


• If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.

You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.

Additional Information

• An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year; 


• On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;


• A take-home pay of 3,500 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);


• Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;


• Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;


• 2,5 days of paid leave per month.
   

Specific skills required for this job:

• Knowledge of power distribution equipment


• Knowledge of electrical distribution schemes, of the corresponding theory and calculation methods


• Knowledge of computer software (office suite) and calculation software for sizing of electrical installations (e.g. Trace)


• Possession of a driving license
