The Neuroscience Discovery group in Basel is responsible for the identification and validation of targets, the selection and characterization of drug candidates, as well as the scientific aspects of projects aiming at the identification of new medicines for diseases of the central nervous system. Our task is to support ongoing research projects using molecular pharmacological methods in order to understand the mode of action of novel compounds.

As an Intern in our Neuroimmunology group you will:

• Have the responsibility of characterizing a knock-out mouse model of a known neuroinflammatogen. In particular, your work will focus on evaluating the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in these animals. State-of the art cell biology techniques including confocal microscopy will be used.


• Evaluate the effect of neuroinflammation on the integrity of the BBB and test the effect of small molecule compounds on the maintenance of and the integrity/permeability of the BBB.


• Prepare brain samples and analyze them using fluorescence microscopy (epifluorescence and confocal) to evaluate BBB leakiness.


• Be part of a team of 3 biologists under the supervision of a laboratory head Learn

We are looking for a high-energy Master student enrolled at a university or in the penultimate or last year of study or at the “Year in Industry” junction of your studies. Your study background is biology, biochemistry, molecular biology student or a related field.

More over you are/have:

• a self-motivated and independent thinker with excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the desire to work in a fast-paced, cutting-edge environment


• fluent in English (writing and speaking)


• feel comfortable in working with Mice


• previous Neuroscience experience is a plus

The preferred start date of the internship is November 2018. Applications need to include a CV and a motivation letter.

Due to regulations non-EU/EFTA citizens have to provide a certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory as part of the application documents.
