Distributed service tracing and performance analysis of a large SOA e-commerce system

Finding and understanding the performance bottlenecks in a large distributed system can become complex with disparate services and log files. The need for a centralized tracing and trace aggregation system quickly emerges. SecuTix 360° is a Ticketing Solution targeting a wide range of businesses and serving increasing numbers of requests, both to end-user and operators.

Twitter has open-sourced the Zipkin tool [zipkin.io/] that is being used to trace the Twitter API requests. Zipkin is based on the Dapper infrastructure by Google [ai.google/research/pubs/pub36356]. The Zipkin tool will join a collection of various other tracing and monitoring tools currently used at SecuTix to help the optimization teams pinpoint potential performance bottlenecks.

In its current form, the Zipkin tool offers great viewing options for specific request traces, but is lacking an aggregation/visualization system.

In this role

• Integrate Twitter Zipkin distributed service tracing tool with the SecuTix 360° services. Validate scalability of the stack.


• Extend or complement the Zipkin tool with aggregation features for performance analysis.

• Required: good Java or Scala skills. Knowledge of some Relational DB or NoSQL storage system.


• Optional skills: Cassandra, ZooKeeper, JavaScript/Bootstrap/D3.
