MSD’s success is backed by ethical integrity, forward momentum, and an inspiring mission to achieve new milestones in global healthcare. Global Medical Affairs (GMA) is recruiting for a pivotal role within the Global Medical Affairs Capabilities (GMAC) function with responsibility for driving and aligning core activities across the EU region: the establishment and implementation of consistent GMAC policies, processes and systems in EU countries, the facilitation of communication and coordination between countries and the GMAC team as well as the coordination and communication of insights from countries to GMAC leadership, providing inputs on global strategy to address challenges and opportunities that are specific to the region.  Furthermore, the Executive Director, EU Medical Affairs Capabilities (MAC) Functional Lead will roll-out and monitor GMAC KPIs on a regional basis and ensure KPIs are utilized to continuously improve regional performance. Reporting directly into the AVP GMAC Lead and “dotted-line” into VP, EU Medical Affairs, this role will be based in Lucerne, Switzerland, and provide oversight and direct leadership for a team consisting of staff covering multiple GMA core capabilities.  Main responsibilities include but will not be limited to:    

  • Communicate GMAC strategy to country teams, and coordinate the implementation of the business policies, processes, systems and tools in the region in support of GMAC objectives

  • Collaborate with the Global Scientific Content team to roll-out relevant policies, procedures and tools to enable scientific exchange by the regional field team

  • Partner with Field Medical Center of Excellence to implement medical training programs for the field medical team as well as other cross-functional members as appropriate

  • Support the review and approval of promotional materials to ensure information is accurate, relevant to the country environment and medical accuracy

  • Ensure effective team communication, performance and documentation of MAC activities and knowledge through the application of suitable reporting systems and structures

  • Provide input on the GMAC strategy to address challenges and opportunities that are specific to the region, considering all regional landscape, business, and compliance requirements

  • Ensure communication and collaboration between the Global and Regional GMAC teams, including sharing of best practices and therapeutic expertise

  • Represent the perspective of the EU countries in discussions with GMAC teams

  • Serve as a vehicle for connecting subject matter experts in the EU countries with their counterparts in GMAC

  • Work with other regionally-focused GMAC team members to ensure that the voice of the regions remains clear in GMAC

  • Align regional needs with the GMAC planning efforts, making recommendations around initiative prioritization and resource allocation

  • Serve as a resource to GMAC on the regional initiatives currently planned in the EU region and how those may impact or be impacted by GMAC future plans

  • Provide insights to the EU region on the future plans for GMAC and their ability to impact prioritization and timing

  • Support the global alignment of GMAP KPIs

  • Monitor KPIs rolled-out by GMAC to ensure uptake by EU

  • Support the compilation and communication of EU performance indicators to GMAC

  • Share the global and other regional KPIs with EU leadership to assist in identifying areas of strength and opportunities for improvement in the EU

  • Lead alignment with the global Field Medical insight collection and dissemination processes within the EU to ensure that EU country insights are visible at the regional and global level

  • Obtain, synthesize and prioritize EU regional and country-level insights for communication to GMAC team across all GMAC components (i.e., scientific content, Global Medical Information, Ops etc.)

  • Coordinate direct interactions between regional / country leads and appropriate GMAC team members to facilitate problem solving


Qualifications

 




Required education and background:  

  • PharmD / PhD / MD with minimum 10 years of relevant experience, or

  • MS degree in Life Sciences with minimum 15 years of relevant experience, or

  • BS degree in Life Sciences with minimum 20 years of relevant experience

 Required experience and skills:  

  • Previous experience in globalizing capabilities within the EU region

  • Previous experience implementing global capabilities at the regional level

  • Previous experience leading multi functions teams within Medical Affairs

  • Previous direct team management experience

  • Expertise of key country landscape and requirements, and ability to understand needs from various internal stakeholders as well as from a regional and country level

  • Deep understanding and application of relevant policies, compliance, operations and change management

  • Demonstrated leadership experience and influence/negotiation skills

  • Strong ability to collaborate and build effective relationships with various roles across functions and geographies

  • Proven ability to work in a complex, evolving, global and regional environment with strategic and analytic skills

  • Strong business acumen

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to collaborate across the organization and with various stakeholders

  • Proven able to perform in a complex organization environment and to effectively operate in a team-oriented global and regional structure

  • Ability to influence others, achieving results without direct line authority

  • Strong communications skills, verbal and written

  • Fluency in English and other languages in region

 Preferred Experience and Skills:  

  • Previous experience as Medical Affairs EU regional lead

  • Previous experience working with field medical or medical information functions
