Why we are recruitingThe Global Plastics Action Partnership (GPAP) is a global public-private delivery mechanism that aims to tackle the most difficult challenges facing the global commons – plastic pollution of rivers, deltas and the ocean. By engaging with governments, regional bodies, international organisations, and business, as well as innovators and civil society organizations, the GPAP seeks to avert the growth in global plastic pollution by 2025. The Forum has catalysed the GPAP through its “Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy” (PACE) and in collaboration with the Friends of Ocean Action, whose secretariat is jointly managed by the Forum and the World Resources Institute. In collaboration with the World Resources Institute and other members of the GPAP, the Forum is seeking to recruit a Director of the Global Plastics Action Partnership. Reporting lines and interactionsThe role will be based in Geneva with frequent international travel. It will sit within the Forum’s Centre for Global Public Goods and work alongside the Forum’s Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy and Friends of Ocean Action teams. Main responsibilitiesThe Director will lead and manage the GPAP secretariat, shape the strategic direction of GPAP in collaboration with its governing council and advisory board; ensure its objectives and expected deliverables are met; and oversee reporting against progress to the programme funders. As the GPAP is a highly networked partnership, you will engage with all its partners and constituents, as well as with the World Economic Forum and World Resources Institute and their various networks. This characteristic will be a core requisite for success in this role. The successful candidate will be assessed on• Shaping and delivering the Global Plastics Action Partnership as a platform for collaboration and delivery of solutions to the global plastics challenge• Successfully managing the Partnership team as a cross-organizational collaboration• Successfully working with governing council, advisory board and steering committee as a network of stakeholders engaged in advancing the partnership Preferred requirements and experience• Have at least 15 years of professional experience in project management and people leadership capabilities, international business and stakeholder engagement, corporate social and environmental responsibility, related economic policy, social development and political economy issues• Proven understanding of the issue of marine plastic pollution, including in-depth knowledge of global plastics supply chains, impacts of plastics on the environment (particularly the marine environment), waste management, related legislation and the political landscape in which this issue currently sits• Have at least to master’s degree or equivalent experience in environment and resource management issues, sustainability, environmental economics, finance, economic policy and/or business strategy• An understanding of the issue of marine plastic pollution within the context of the ASEAN and West African region and in relation to Small Island Developing States is desired• Have experience working in an international and multicultural environment and possess strong knowledge in the key areas of building and delivering global public-private partnerships• Have a strong interest in deepening public-private collaboration and committed to the objectives of GPAP and the wider mission of both the Forum and WRI’s Sustainable Ocean Initiative• Have perfect command of written and spoken English; fluency in at least one other language is an advantage• Possess excellent communication, interpersonal and networking skills; a positive team player, hardworking and an inspirational leader• Enjoy talking to the media and be able to help moderate and facilitate high-level discussions Why work at the ForumWe believe that progress happens by bringing together people from all walks of life who have the drive and the influence to improve the state of the world by building awareness and cooperation, shaping mindsets and agendas and driving collective action.
