Apply to JobJob ID247744BRPosition TitleHead Vivarium OperationsJob DescriptionThe Head Vivarium Operations supports Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR), Scientific Operations (SciOps)- Laboratory Animal services (LAS) organization by directing a high quality vivarium operation program and facilities that are in compliance with local regulations and AAALAC International guidelines.

She/he proactively resources and metrics animal care and study support through partnerships with the Disease Areas and LAS Study Support group.

She/he ensures facility space, equipment and associated resources are efficiently deployed with rapidly changing vivarium/research needs.



Main responsibilities:

• Ensure maintenance & future development of Vivarium Operations (VO) programs to continually align service portfolio to meet needs of evolving in vivo research community.

• Continually evolve the campus vivarium to meet changing research needs (strategic vision and execution of animal facilities design, infrastructure and renovations).

• Ensure VO alignment with other core LAS services (Veterinary Services & Technical Services) and Scientific Operations.

• Manage operational budget, expenses and projections.

• Assure that the care and welfare of laboratory animals is provided in accordance with local regulations and AAALAC International guidelines.

• Provide leadership to the Vivarium Operations group to maximize the contribution of the technical staff to the animal care program and to meet LAS’s strategic objectives on culture and colleague development.

• Manage talent through focused colleague career development and performance management.

• As a member of the site LAS leadership team, play a key role in building and executing a comprehensive strategy for LAS, and partner with all groups in LAS to optimize cross-line operational efficiency and set staff project priorities to improve productivity through effective management practices.

• Responsible for development and implementation of appropriate quality assurance programs, planning and maintenance of operating budgets, purchase of capital equipment and supplies and effective management of physical resources within LAS.

• Participate in the direction of a centralized LAS program of occupational health and safety for all individuals having significant contact with research animals.

• Act as an interface with the scientific staff in NIBR to refine animal use methodologies, reduce animal use numbers when appropriate, and explore alternatives to animal use whenever possible.

• Lead in operational excellence by defining metrics and key performance indicators at Basel and in collaboration with other LAS sites.

• Assess development and implementation of enhanced and/or new technologies, equipment and procedures for application to the work environment.

• Back-up responsibilities for the Global Head LAS as needed. May be required to work under one of the following: federal and state laws and associated Regulations and Standards, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Good Laboratory Practices, Public Health Service Policy and/or AAALAC accreditation standards.Minimum requirements• Bachelor degree in Science, Veterinary-related field or an equivalent. Advanced degrees such as DVM, PhD, MS, and/or MBA in a related field are desirable.

• 5-10 years’ work experience in a relevant / related field with progressive responsibility.

• ACLAM, LATg and/or CMAR or other specialty certifications desirable

• Demonstrated supervisory and managerial experience in a laboratory animal setting required.

• Demonstrated ability to direct a program of substantial breadth and complexity with experience in budget and facility planning, and project execution.
