Topology Optimization PhD Student

The applied research and industrial activities conducted within the Precision Mechanisms section of CSEM are devoted to complex scientific instrumentation systems. Our activity spreads from the development of high-precision instruments for space and astrophysics applications to the design of compliant mechanisms for watch industry.


The Ph.D. will be conducted in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA).


Your mission


Topology optimization and compliant mechanisms allow to discover novel and enhance existing geometries for better performance. Increasing energy storage, maximizing lowest eigenfrequencies, maximizing transverse stiffness, and enable applications that require distributed compliance.


CSEM has a great interest to advance the state of topology optimization beyond the current limited state of the art.


As a doctoral student, you will participate in our efforts in research for topology optimisation for compliant mechanisms. You will develop high performance tools in terms of high quality of the solution and computational time. The experimental verification of the results in also part of the activity.


Your activity will consist in:



  • State of the art on topology optimization of compliant mechanisms

  • Propositions of implementation including the required constraints for the realization of compliant mechanisms

  • Selection of the method for high computational efficiency

  • Development of the tool for the optimization of compliant mechanisms

  • Application of the tool and tests of compliant mechanism made by Additive Manufacturing.


Your profile



  • Master degree in computer science, applied mathematics, or similar background

  • Good knowledge of numerical methods, finite element analysis and optimization algorithms

  • Very good expertise of high performance programming languages such as C, C++, Julia or others

  • Experience with parallelization, GPU computations, distributed computing is seen as a benefit

  • Interest in mechanical engineering and metal additive manufacturing

  • Enthusiastic, proactive and autonomous

  • Able to present results succinctly

  • A good level of spoken and written English.
