Translational medicine is a rapidly growing discipline in biomedical research and aims to expedite the discovery of new diagnostic tools and treatments by using a multi-disciplinary, highly collaborative, "bench-to-bedside" approach. The offered Fellowship Program will give candidates the opportunity to experience the challenges and excitements of preclinical and clinical drug development and to gain experience in pharmaceutical industry.

This program will enable candidates to acquire “hands on”-experience in preclinical and clinical drug development by becoming directly involved in the development of new medicines. To maximize the benefit to the candidate and Roche, the program will integrate the candidate in an active drug development program appropriate to their area of clinical and scientific interest and expertise.

Objective of the trainee program:

  • Enhance knowledge of preclinical and clinical drug development and the pharmaceutical industry

    • Learn about and participate in core aspects of preclinical research (e.g. in vitro and in vivo models of mechanisms and/or disease and their translational relevance) and clinical drug development (biomarker development, clinical endpoint selection, natural history study design, clinical development planning);

    • Understand the role of different functions involved in the preclinical and clinical drug development process;

    • Observe and support ongoing projects within the therapeutic area of the department (Neuroscience, Ophthalmology, Rare Disease);

    • Understand key internal milestones in early development (e.g. Clinical Lead, Clinical Candidate Selection)

    • Participate in strategic planning (e.g. Clinical Development Plan, Target product profile), preparation of Study material (e.g. study protocol), internal and external meetings (e.g. Investigator meeting, Scientific Advisory Meeting);

    • Engage in experimental research in drug discovery (e.g. conduct of preclinical in vivo experiments);

Development of key skill sets

  • Interaction with different functions in Project Team and Clinical Expert Team Meetings (incl. Medical Affairs, Patient Partnership) to plan and implement study activities such as clinical endpoints and protocol design.

  • Presentation at internal and external meetings

  • Interaction with Senior Leadership

  • Interaction with Patient Associations

  • Coaching and Guidance from managers and peers (incl. mentorship);

  • Publication(optional, if project allows);

Candidate Profile

  • MD with advanced specialty training in any of neurology, psychiatry, pediatrics, ideally board-certified or national equivalent;

  • Experience in basic or clinical research (PhD degree, or appropriate list of publications);

  • Intention to progress their career as world-leading clinical scientist;
