The Optical Network Planner is a key part of the ViaSat team, responsible for the detailed planning of network infrastructure to support our growing satellite fleet.This includes but is not limited to network topology planning for new builds and expansions, coordinating complex network implementations, identifying risks and evaluating alternatives.
Plan optical network using both off-the-shelf and in-house developed network design and analysis tools
Develop implementation plans, priorities and timing to meet technical and business objectives
Plan routes for fiber-based networks based on engineering specifications and network architecture standards
Work with engineering, deployment, and sourcing to support network infrastructure expansion
Collaborate with strategic negotiators and designers to compile and present project feasibility studies, and to acquire the assets needed to deliver the network
Maintain detailed network documentation including topology, installation, build plans and equipment design
Assist in the coordination of complex activation and deployment activities.
Ensure systems are thoroughly supported by monitoring and management systems
Act as an escalation contact during outages, performing restoration and root cause failure analysis
Occasional On-Call work required
Requirements Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
BA/BS degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
Experience with use of layer 0 and 1 network planning tools
Solid understanding of optical network designs
Experience documenting, deployingand operating DWDM systems
Experience developing or integrating with network management systems and network automation
Experience with NOC functions, processes and performance analysis
Additional requirements:
Fluent in English
Preferably a good level in German, Italian or Polish
EU citizenship, valid Swiss working permit or ability to obtain one.
Preferences Preferred qualifications
Telecom OSP experience with fiber optic networks related to mapping and GIS
Experience with Software Defined Networking (SDN)
Experience with continuous integration & delivery and DevOps methodologies
Software Engineering experience with coding and debugging skills in C, C++, Java or any modern programming language
Strong written and oral communications skills with the ability to effectively communicate across the organization
Experience in an Agile/Scrum environment
