• Support musculoskeletal diseases-related projects by testing candidate drugs in relevant rodent disease models
• Run already established models as well as develop new models and methods according to needs
• Perform functional tests in vivo as well as biochemical, molecular biological and histology analysis
• Provide basic data analysis and assistance in design of next experiments
• Document own experiments in lab notebook (including tables, graphs, etc.)
• Present results to supervisor and may present to lab at project meetings
• Maintain infrastructure of laboratory
Your daily tasks will include but not be limited to the following:
• Independently perform in-vivo experiments in a wide range of rodent models.
• Handle animals and perform surgery and necropsy of rodents (e.g., compound administration, clinical monitoring, minimum implantation, cannulation, blood/ organ sampling).
• Perform functional tests and surgeries in rodents (e.g., performance tests, coordination tests, minimum implantation).
• Perform ex-vivo analysis of tissues from rats and mice and conduct biochemical, molecular biological and histology analysis.
• Demonstrate ability to apply knowledge in discipline to complete work assignments
• Exhibit understanding and knowledge of techniques, instrumentation and underlying principles
• Maintain awareness of and provide recommendations on standard laboratory tools and procedures
• Perform duties with appropriate knowledge of relevant laboratory tools and procedures
• Understand lab functions
• Operate and perform routine maintenance on instruments
• Conduct activities in compliance with Novartis safety, waste disposal and other regulatory guidelines
• Demonstrate a working knowledge of relevant Novartis policies and procedures
• Responsible to understand and follow established HSE policies and procedures applicable to particular function and consult with line manager if further guidance or assistance on performing tasks safely is needed
• Identify and report unsafe equipment, conditions and practices so that they may be corrected prior to an incident
• Complete training and use laboratory and personal protective equipment as required
• May provide assistance in design of next experiment
• Conducts experiments with input from supervisorMinimum requirements• BS or MS (USA) or equivalent (e.g., apprenticeship as Lab Technician Biology) in a scientific discipline such as Biology or Pharmacology
• Experience in a pharmacology lab working with rodents and conducting in-vivo experiments (handling and surgery, drug application, sampling, animal welfare regulations)
• LTK1 accreditation or equivalent
• Experience in biochemical, molecular biological, cell culture and histology techniques (e.g. qPCR, ELISA, western blot)
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. German is a plus
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Curiosity, initiative, commitment and good organization skills
