Senior Staff Scientist / NMR Facility Manager at the Biozentrum Basel

It is home to more than 30 research groups with scientists from over 40 countries. Research at the Biozentrum comprises the areas of Cell Growth & Development, Infection Biology, Neurobiology, Structural Biology & Biophysics and Computational & Systems Biology. With more than 500 employees, the Biozentrum is the largest department at the University of Basel's Faculty of Science.



We are looking to recruit a permanent senior staff scientist to operate the NMR facilities and contribute to world-class research in integrative structural biology. The position is available from 1 January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.



The NMR facilities at Biozentrum Basel comprise four modern high-field solution NMR spectrometers (900, 700, 600, 600 MHz) equipped with cryogenic and room-temperature probes, and setups for solid state- and high-pressure-NMR. NMR research at the Biozentrum is highly integrated with a cryo-EM facility, a biophysics core facility, a crystallization facility, scientific computing and a light microscopy facility. These technology platforms form a center of integrative structural biology, with numerous collaborations within and beyond the life science hub Basel and the local pharmaceutical industry.
Your position

• Management and supervision of the daily operation of all NMR spectrometers, including technical maintenance and upgrades


• Consultation, supervision and active scientific participation in research projects of the Hiller and other user labs


• Development and implementation of new NMR experiments and advanced data sampling and processing schemes


• Development and implementation of fully automated setups for advanced NMR spectroscopy, data acquisition and processing and analysis


• Organization and participation in teaching activities


• Communication and negotiations with hardware manufacturers

The staff scientist will be a member of the research group of Prof. Sebastian Hiller and will have the long-term possibility to pursue own research projects, including the acquisition of external research funds.
Your profile



The successful candidate holds a PhD degree, has a strong practical and theoretical background in biomolecular solution NMR spectroscopy and a good technical understanding of NMR spectrometers. Ideally, the candidate has practical experience in operating an NMR facility, and in collaborative multidisciplinary research projects.
