The role


As a Lead Data Scientist with Expedia, you will contribute to the critical aim of helping the organization understand, shape and optimize its hotel and vacation rental portfolio across the world. You will apply advanced analytic techniques such as machine learning, data mining and statistical modeling to design and implement complex models and algorithms to drive key business initiatives. You are able to handle both planned and ad-hoc work, own important data products, prioritize workload effectively, and thrive in a dynamic environment. You are self-motivated, a fast learner and work well under pressure to meet tight deadlines. Communicating your findings and implications to your teammates and to business partners clearly and concisely is key. You are technically strong and possess excellent business acumen and communication skills.


Responsibilities



  • Understand business challenges and transform them into advanced analytics / machine learning / data mining problems; use your analytics toolbox to effectively solve them

  • Build, assess, and iteratively improve predictive models using best-in-class machine learning methods and best practices

  • Gather and manipulate large volumes of data; create new and improved techniques and/or solutions for data collection, management, and usage

  • Communicate results in a comprehensible manner to all levels of the company (field teams up to Snr. Management)

  • Take ownership for important data products, understanding the business partners, prioritizing work, assessing their effectiveness and performance

  • Develop a deep understanding of the sales organization, their daily challenges, and what data can help them optimize their time

  • Understand the industry, the market, supply and demand economics, and the company’s value proposition for both travelers and suppliers

  • Illustrate key business trends through effective data interpretation and visualization

  • Establish and maintain accurate and robust senior management reporting

  • Fulfill ad-hoc requests for data and analysis


Requirements


Background



  • Master’s degree (PhD preferred) in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Operational Research or similar

  • Several years of experience in a data science / machine learning / predictive modeling role, preferably in an e-commerce or a technology company

  • Track record of data science publications (peer-reviewed papers, conference presentations, white papers, etc.) preferred

  • Experience managing projects with business partners based in multiple countries and time-zones preferred


Technical Knowledge



  • Hands-on analytics experience, with validated ability to extract and combine data from multiple sources (SQL databases, Teradata, Hadoop, AWS etc.), converting raw data into actionable insights and / or reports

  • Expertise with a statistical modelling tool such as R or Python (pandas)

  • Track record of contributions to open-source projects related to data science preferred

  • Applied experience in, and excellent understanding of, building machine learning / AI models in production environments to support essential business processes

  • Proficiency with C++, Scala, Rust, or other high-level programming language

  • Familiarity with software engineering methodologies, including version control, release management, unit testing etc.

  • Knowledge of data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI etc.) preferred

  • Top-class business acumen, analytical rigor, problem-solving mind-set, and attention to detail

  • High level of intellectual curiosity and focus on generating action-oriented business insights

  • Validated ability to handle the needs of a data product’s partners, and to effectively communicate with them

  • Proven track record of working with cross-functional teams

  • Excellent understanding of how to effectively visualize highly complex data

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
