Job Description

Are you a technician looking for a challenging professional experience to further your career?  If so, joining CERN’s TTE programme may very well give you that challenge.  This position as an Electrical Technician is part of our prestigious TTE programme. 

The Fibre Optics and Cabling Section in the Electrical Engineering Group is responsible for the installation of fibre optics and copper cabling in the entire CERN accelerator complex and general infrastructure.

By joining the Section, you will be asked to actively participate in the preparation and work supervision of optical fibre installations.

Functions·      

• Establish installation requirements for optical fibres in the entire accelerator complex and general infrastructure at CERN;


• Take part in defining optical fibre specifications and in their qualification/quality assurance process;


• Assist the project managers in preparing technical work files for the contractors;


• Contribute in drafting the planning for cabling works and follow up with the contractors;


• Organize and manage worksite meetings;


• Verify the quality of the work performed by contractors;


• Organise and execute fibre patching as required;


• Organize maintenance and repair activities when required;


• Participate –as required - in similar activities for copper cabling;


• Prepare work progress reports;

You will be guided in acquiring the capacity of dealing with installations of increasing complexity. The ability of efficiently supporting and integrating with the Section Team will become a key aspect of the daily work.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

• You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (home.cern/about/member-states);


• You have a Technical Diploma in Electricity or equivalent (careers.cern/ttediplomas), and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;


• If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;


• If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.


• Basic knowledge of fibre optics and their applications.


• Willingness to work on cable installations on-site (machine tunnels, galleries, experimental areas, radiation environment) for most of your time, and excellent team-working attitude.


• Good knowledge of English or French.


• A valid driving license.

Additional Information

• An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year; 


• On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;


• A take-home pay of 3,500 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);


• Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;


• Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;


• 2,5 days of paid leave per month.
