This position is located in the Languages Support Unit, Languages Service, Division of Conference Management, United Nations Office at Geneva.
ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
• Performs tasks related to business analysis, testing, debugging, maintenance and implementation of application systems releases, modules and functionalities.
• Tests and implements simple computer application systems and programs using UN established standards for IT technologies, programming languages and tools.
• Serves as subject matter expert, under the leadership of the project manager and in coordination with the relevant development team, in the planning, specification, design, development, implementation and support of computer application systems; independently liaises with users to define and specify requirements.
• Carries out scheduled services, installs language specific computer application systems software and equipment according to specifications; monitors computer applications systems using appropriate monitoring tools and produces monitoring reports.
• Provides 1 st and 2nd level technical support on, including end-user support of Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, machine translation, translation memory, documentation database and systems.
• Diagnoses and resolves relevant software applications or connectivity problems with minimum delays; follow-up and logs all actions in tracking system; takes steps to resolve problems and/or to complete tasks.
• Prepares technical and user documentation for deployed computer application systems, as well as training materials and conducts technical presentations.
• Maintains functional specifications for computer application systems, programs and procedures implemented and/or modified.
• Provides support for deployed computer application systems, including version management, data recovery and deployment to users' offices; performs ongoing reviews with users and developers and responds to users requests.
• Drafts correspondence and communications, including work plan revisions and other related issues, as well as prepares unit contributions for a variety of periodic reports.
• Serves as focal point for coordination, monitoring and expedition of computer application systems development projects, involving extensive liaison with diverse organizational units, including the relevant Regional Technology Centre (RTC) and Enterprise Application Centre (EAC), to initiate requests; prepares standard terms of reference; processes and follows-up on administrative actions and resolves issues related to project implementation, e.g. organization of and participation in training, procurement of equipment and services, etc.
• Provides advice to clients regarding ICT standards and workflow processes.
• Performs quality assurance procedures to ensure client satisfaction. Escalates problems encountered to the supervisor. Keeps abreast of developments in the field; conducts research on new technologies as requested; perfonns benchmarking and proposes new acquisitions.
• Provides ongoing and specialized training to end-users on standard and language specific systems, including word processing techniques, CAT tools and other software and databases; advises users on alignment, technology, including but not limited to machine translation systems.
• Provides guidance to new/junior staff.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

High school diploma or equivalent. Having passed the International Computer Drivers License (ICDL) or the European Computer Driver's License (ECDL) would be an asset.
Work ExperienceAt least seven (7) years of experience in information systems analysis and programming, systems administration and maintenance, software development, technical writing or related area are required. Experience as advance MS Word user in building Macros and VBAs (Visual Basic for Application) for the creation and design of online/interactive models in MS office is desirable. Experience with web application development, content management systems, HTML 5 Java Script and CSS is also desirable. Experience with documents processing systems, Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, as well as experience in technical writing, and providing training would be an advantage.
LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English or French is required. Knowledge of Russian is
an advantage.
