At Roche, 80,000 people across 150 countries are pushing back the frontiers of healthcare. Working together, we’ve become one of the world’s leading research-focused healthcare groups. Our success is built on innovation, curiosity and diversity, and on seeing each other’s differences as an advantage. To innovate healthcare, Roche has ambitious plans to keep learning and growing – and is seeking people who have the same goals for themselves.

The headquarters in Basel is one of Roche’s largest sites, over 8,000 people from approximately 80 countries work at Roche Basel. Favored by its geographic location in the heart of Europe, the Basel area is one of the most dynamic economic regions in Switzerland – a great place to live and work.

The department "Pharmaceutical Development" is responsible for the technical development of sterile dosage forms of biotechnologically and chemically engineered molecules, focusing on pre-filled syringes and vials for preclinical and clinical studies, and the market supplies. Our areas of involvement include: the entire range of formulation and process development for the finished product, process up-scaling, development of primary packaging, emerging technologies, and commercial manufacturing support within the Roche network. All these departments cumulatively offer multiple internship opportunities in Fall 2019.

We are now looking for extraordinary, highly motivated, and talented students to join our international team in an outstanding and competitive environment. As a student intern your responsibilities will:

  • actively participate (6 months) in one of the following non-GMP pharmaceutical development sections focused on:

  •      Early-stage formulation and process development

  •      Late-stage formulation, process, and primary packaging development

  •      Innovative manufacturing technologies or infrastructure projects and commercial product support

  •      Drug delivery

  • have an opportunity to engage in departmental activities related to innovative galenic formulations, processes and technologies

  • work independently on small projects in the laboratory

  • gain an insight into the dynamic and diverse working environment of pharmaceutical development

  • create technical documentation and present results in internal meetings and learn how current industrial requirements are implemented in everyday life

The laboratory projects you will be involved in tend to relate to scientific topics such as, but not limited to:

  • Protein aggregation (biophysics and analytical methods)

  • Interfacial science

  • Developing new particle characterization/quantification methods

  • Exploring new formulation approaches to stabilize proteins (monoclonal antibodies and fusion proteins), oligonucleotides, peptides, and sterile small molecule drugs

  • Material science (characterization of primary packaging coming in contact with biologics)

  • Analytical method development of non-GMP methods for characterizing formulations

  • Process development of drug product (i.e. experimental optimization and computational fluid dynamics)

  • Drug delivery systems (e.g. depot formulations, novel intraocular systems, particulate protein formulations, etc)

  • Design and development of novel manufacturing and automated in-process analytical equipment

  • Automation of formulation screening and analysis

  • Computational in-silico prediction of molecule and formulation stability

You are an enrolled student in a related field (e.g. biology, chemistry, biotechnology, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, etc.) or you passed the 2nd state exams of your pharmacy studies and are interested in using and expanding knowledge in a modern working environment. If you bring as well the following, we are looking forward to receiving your application.

  • Interest in problem solving and optimization strategies and ability to learn quickly and adjust to a modern working environment

  • You can work in a team and also independently

  • You are flexible, well organized and you have strong communication skills
