Your mission :

The mission of EPFL’s EssentialTech Center is to develop technological innovations for development and humanitarian action. Medical oxygen is essential, for example to fight against infant mortality or as part of anesthesia in surgery. As part of the EssentialTech Center, you will lead a major project to develop an oxygen concentrator adapted to the context of poor countries.Currently seeking a project manager for the GlobalO2 project.
Main duties and responsibilities include :



  • Conduct the project in collaboration with internal and external partners in Switzerland and Africa.

  • Lead system engineering research for technology development.

  • Develop and propose a value chain and an economic model for spinning out the final prototype by applying the EssentialTech Centre’s approach and methodology.

  • Establish and manage the project planning: follow up deadlines and deliverables.

  • Manage filing and communicating reports to donors.

  • Manage the project’s budget.

  • Disseminate results in the form of scientific publications, articles and patents.

  • Present the project regularly to the general public, media.

  • Contribute to further fundraising to enable the project to reach the industrialisation phase timely.

  • Involve students and interact with scientific partners.


Your profile :



  • Background: At least a M.Sc. degree (or higher) in Mechanical, Materials Electrical or Chemical engineering, Mechanics or Material sciences and experience with engineering application in life sciences.

  • Experience in entrepreneurship and the private sector.

  • Work experience in / with Africa, knowledge of health systems.

  • Leadership qualities and a strong sense of diplomacy.

  • Self-motivated, able to face difficulties with determination.

  • A post graduate qualification in business/entrepreneurship would be an advantage.

  • Excellent level of spoken and written English.

  • Willingness to travel a few times during the year, especially to Africa.
