The Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance (DCAF) is one of the world’s leading institutions in the areas of security sector governance (SSG) and security sector reform SSR). DCAF’s Policy and Research Division. The Policy & Research Division (PRDiv) produces empirically-grounded and policy-oriented comparative research on global thematic topics relating to security sector governance. PRD is also responsible for working with multilateral organisations, such as the UN and OSCE, to improve and harmonize their security sector governance programming, particularly in the context of the UN’s Sustaining Peace Agenda and Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. Finally, PRD conducts research on global approaches to monitoring and evaluating projects related to security sector governance.


 


The Policy and Research Division is seeking a part-time (50%)Research Assistantto support the Division’s ongoing publication and research projects.  The position commences on 01 November 2019 or earlier. The position is for a period of two years, renewable for another term of two years.


 


Main responsibilities:


 


Under the direct supervision of the Division’s Head and Deputy Head, the Research Assistant provides research, editing, logistical and administrative support as follows:


 



  • Assist in the review, editing and layout of reports and publications, especially DCAF’s flagship publications SSR Backgrounders and SSR Papers;

  • Carry out targeted research as appropriate;

  • Assist in the implementation of policy and research events (panels, workshops etc)

  • Liaising with external and internal partners;  

  • Perform other tasks as required.


 


Requirements:


 



  • Thorough understanding of security sector governance and reform concepts

  • Prior experience with conducting policy and research projects preferably in the area of SSG/R or related fields.

  • Currently enrolled at university as a graduate student, preferablyin political science,international affairs, security studies,law, governance,or related disciplines;

  • English mother tongue or fluency in English is essential, and fluency in French is a plus.

  • Outstanding research, writing and analyticalskills, including the ability to process and analyse data;

  • Demonstrated ability to review, edit and layout texts suitable for publication;

  • Excellent IT skills; other relevant skills, including strong organizational abilities, communication skills, ability to work under time pressure and with strict deadlines, ability to work independently and with others in an international environment;

  • Swiss or EU citizenship or a valid work permit.
