At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on home.cern.

Then join an international team of highly trained firefighters at CERN, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory! CERN, take part!
Introduction
The Fire and Rescue Service is part of the Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection (HSE) Unit. Firefighters are on call 24/7 and in addition to maintaining an adequate operational capacity, they dedicate time to training and maintenance. Training includes providing courses in first aid, self-rescue breathing apparatus and use of fire extinguishers. Maintenance work is focused primarily on fire extinguishers and hose reels. Most of this work is carried out during the week so the Fire service shift pattern includes periods of work alongside the day staff of the Organization (8 hour working days) in addition to the usual 24/7 shift work.
CERN's Fire and Rescue Service also collaborates with the Organization's Host States' Fire Departments: SDIS 01 (France) and SIS of Geneva (Switzerland), with whom punctual joint exercises are held.
