The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival (www.cites.org).
Its Scientific Services Team (SST) leads the scientific work of the Secretariat, including in the maintenance of the Appendices of the Convention (the list of species whose trade is regulated) and in supporting Parties in making non-detriment findings, which confirm the biological sustainability of export trade being permitted. The Team also administers the Review of Significant Trade, a compliance mechanism to correct instances of unsustainable trade. SST supports the work of the Convention’s two science committees (the Animals and Plants Committees), and undertakes other instructions of a scientific, management or technical nature given to the Secretariat by the Conference of the Parties.
This position is located UNEP, Geneva duty station. Under the overall supervision of the Chief of the SST, the incumbent will, within limits of delegated authority, assist the Scientific Support Officer (Fauna) as follows:
Coordinate the implementation of CITES activities related to animal species, including marine species: including support to meetings of CITES technical and governing bodies.
1. Support to CITES meetings including outreach:
• Provides administrative and substantive support to meetings, of CITES technical and governing bodies, the conferences of the Parties, et cetera by proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparing of background documents and presentations, handling logistics, et cetera.
• Undertakes outreach activities; participates in the development of training workshops, seminars, participates in and makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
• Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background paper, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies inputs to publications.
2. Support to CITES programmes/projects:
• Works with key clients to facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects to improve the implementation of CITES, monitors and analyzes specific aspects of programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and recommends corrective actions; liaises with relevant key parties; partner organizations and bodies; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
• Carries out basic research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities, etc., to include collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources.
• Provides substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of emerging development issues and trends, participation in impact evaluation or equivalent studies.
• Assists in performing consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.
• Participates in survey initiatives; issues data collection tools, reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares preliminary conclusions.
• Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and preparation of related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget).
3. Performs other duties as required in the CITES Scientific Services Team to strengthen the implementation of CITES.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in biology, natural resource management, natural resource economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work ExperienceA minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in project/programme management, or related area is required.
Experience in providing scientific support in the framework of an inter-governmental organization is desirable.
Good knowledge of CITES, a basic understanding of international law, experience with providing secretariat services and previous experience in projects to improve natural resource management, particularly fisheries management, would be an advantage.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
