Technician in Configuration Management & Quality control (TTE Programme)

Inseriert am: 30.04.2020

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.

Job Description

Are you a technician looking for a challenging professional experience to further your career?  If so, joining CERN’s TTE programme may very well give you that challenge.  This position as a Quality Control Technician is part of our prestigious TTE programme.

At CERN, configuration management has been developed in the past years in the Engineering Department, to manage, control and report the layout of the accelerators. You will join the Experimental Areas group who recently decided to apply the same strategy. The goal of configuration management is to provide a clear and coherent picture of the accelerator at a given point in time. This means maintaining an up-to-date database of all accelerator components and implementing a strict change management process.

Functions

  • You will participate to a detailed study of the North Experimental Area beamline configuration (and eventual associated areas) and to a complete inventory of the beam line components, including components name and type, responsible entity, technical assembly design verification with dimensions extraction, etc,. To each beamline component, a cumulative position will be associated and shall be cross checked with the physics files and verified in situ along the beamlines;

  • You will also have to do some fieldwork such as panoramic pictures capture and components identification;

  • Once the inventory of the beam line components has been completed, you will actively participate in the definition of the Product Breakdown Structure - also known as the Hardware Baseline of the North Experimental Area- with the aim to describe the logic behind it and to clarify the types of documents that should be stored under the resulting structure CERN information archives.

This work will be conducted in the context of the North Area Consolidation Project which covers a large set of facilities: the target area, the secondary particle beam transport lines and the whole experimental infrastructure, as well as auxiliary facilities.

Training values:

As a junior technician working on configuration management you will:

  • Learn the main components and the functioning principle of a particle beam transport line (Collimators, magnets, beam stoppers, vacuum, beam instrumentation);

  • Learn how to manage a complex product through system engineering;

  • Develop Project and Quality management skills.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (home.cern/about/member-states);

  • You have a Technical Diploma (careers.cern/ttediplomas) in the field of Mechanics, System Engineering, Management  or equivalent, and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;

  • If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;

  • If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.

  • You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.

Additional Information

CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion.  In return, CERN will provide you with:

  • An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year;

  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;

  • A monthly stipend of 4565 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);

  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;

  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;

  • 2,5 days of paid leave per month.

Specific skills required for this job:

Technical skills required for this project:

  • Experience in drafting of 3D & 2D technical drawing;

  • Quality control and documentation management;

  • Good knowledge of technical English (French knowledge is considered as an asset).

Relevant behavioral skills:

  • Flexibility: Adjust plan and priorities to changing circumstances:

  • Achieving results: Take responsibility for achieving quality results and work in a structured and efficient way;

  • Communication: Both written and verbal good communication skills to interface with other teams and groups;

  • Solving problems: Anticipate, identify, and analyse key issues in complex situations.
