The Wyss Center for Bio and Neuro Engineering is seeking a Microscopy Research Technician to join their Advanced Light-sheet Imaging Center (ALICe), a platform delivering full service from sample clearing to Light-sheet imaging and 3D Virtual Reality visualization.

Job Description

The Technician will work both independently and collaboratively as a member of the Wyss Center to operate Light-sheet microscopes, manage post-processing of datasets, provide support services that facilitate a broad range of neuroscience and neuroengineering research projects and collaborations, and contribute to the successful expansion of ALICe. The Technician will report to the Preclinical Neuroscience Platform manager.


In his/her position, the Microscopy Research Technician will:



  • Operate custom built light-sheet microscopes and provide technical assistance to users

  • Schedule, run and troubleshoot sample clearing procedures 

  • Assist in preparing samples (mounting) and chemicals for light-sheet microscopes

  • Provide support to users for image analysis and perform some post-processing of datasets (i.e. stitching multi-tile acquisition)

  • Promote and maintain clean, organized work areas, including cleaning and maintaining laboratory supplies

  • Perform a variety of biological (tissue clearing), engineering (microscopy), and software testing in a timely manner both with groups and individually

  • Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Keep up to date with new clearing procedures, new image analysis pipelines / new imaging technologies available from scientific literature

  • Maintain accurate and specific experimental records

  • Consistently participate and contribute to the improvement of task workflows

  • Demonstrate willingness to perform non-standard tasks as needed to optimize the team productivity and cohesiveness


The candidate should be flexible and open to implement technical solutions for multiple imaging applications in a cutting edge, multidisciplinary research-oriented environment. The candidate must also be able to work independently to contribute to new approaches and the development and optimization of protocols used in the platform.

Profile requis


Required skills and experience:



  • Master’s degree in physical, life, or biological sciences 

  • Background in cellular biology

  • Experience in fluorescence microscopy

  • Between 1 to 3 years of demonstrated experience in a research laboratory 

  • Ability to remain productive, organized, and flexible in a very dynamic environment

  • Demonstrated experience as a self-starter and fast learner both independently and within a team

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to communicate effectively experimental results in both informal and formal meetings

  • Ability to work as part of a team and with external collaborators

  • English written and spoken, French a plus


Additional skills include: 



  • Background in neuroscience

  • Experience or interest in coding (Python, Matlab R, LabVIEW)
