OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Cervical cancer ranks 4th as a killer disease among women suffering from cancer.

Studies have shown that in 2018 there was an estimated 570, 000 new cases of this disease, with a mortality of 90% in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Mortality caused by cervical cancer can be reduced if not avoided through an approach that includes prevention, community education, effective screening and treatment programmes.

Recognizing the burden of cervical cancer and urgency for implementation, the Director General of WHO, made a global call for action towards the elimination of cervical cancer in May 2018.

Subsequently, Executive Board decision EB144(2) noted that urgent action is needed to scale up implementation of proven cost-effective measures, including vaccination against human papillomavirus, screening and treatment of pre-cancer, early detection and prompt treatment of invasive cancers and palliative care.
