Position Purpose & Summary The person in this position will be responsible for conducting fundamental analysis on coffee primarily. Another important part of the job is analyzing relevant ‘macro-economic’ drivers that could impact the coffee markets. The Global Coffee Analyst will advocate long or short trading positions, with risk assessment, based on the objective analysis of market data. The analyst should have significant experience in supply and demand analytics in coffee. They must also use non-traditional sources of data & analytics to propose trading strategies based upon a ‘top-down’ analysis of market drivers. Experience in other soft commodities like cotton would be considered a plus. The position reports to the head of the Softs Commodity Trading Desk, which is part of Cargill’s World Trading Group in Geneva. Principal Accountabilities Analysis, modelling & systems50 % - Conducts Supply and Demand analysis based on the traditional ‘bottom-up’ approach, while also being strongly focused on a more macro or ‘top-down’ approach, especially to predict demand direction
Drive crop prediction based on weather/crop input data in liaison with other analysts in Cargill
Build demand models based upon internal/external data and macro-indicators (GDP/pop growth/customer trends)
Follow published data/analysis (subscriptions, periodical reports) in order to challenge and finetune our analysis
Forecast trade flows based upon global parities and order flow (farmer selling/consumptive coverage etc.)
30% - Conducts market analysis and price prediction based upon fundamental and non-fundamental analysis
Identify price ranges based upon fundamental inputs/models
Incorporate macro-analysis to predict price scenarios, including impact of correlated commodity markets/currencies/money flow
Work closely with the quantative team to develop models that are tradable based upon a quantamental approach
20% - Manages, controls access and updates S&D systems
Ensures up-to-date data is kept on the database and add missing data and business insights
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in Agricultural Economics, Business, Economics, (Data) Science, MBA, Statistics or similar field
5-10 years analysis experience in the coffee market, experience in other softs markets on top considered a strong plus
Strong ability to manage complex projects that span businesses, time zones and levels in the organization
Must be self-motivating and driven, and well organized
Solution oriented and curiosity to drive continuous improvement
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s Degree or equivalent experience in Agricultural Economics, Business, Economics, (Data) Science, MBA, Statistics or similar field
Understanding and experience in data science and quantitative modelling
Advanced database and modeling skills
Working understanding of production agriculture and agronomy
Experience in trading analytics
Experience with data visualization
