Your tasks

The Research/Teaching Assistant is expected to develop her/his own research project, broadly addressing a question relating to international security. Of particular interest are topics related to

  • the new nuclear age (changing demands of deterrence, arms control, etc.)

  • applications of behavioral models of International Relations (in particular those using experimental methods.

In addition to completing a doctoral dissertation, the successful candidate will support the

  • research

  • teaching, and

  • consulting activities

of the Chair of International Relations (Prof. James W. Davis, Ph.D.).

Teaching responsibilities include

  • a tutorial on International Relations Theory as well as

  • assistance for seminars in the fields of International Relations and Foreign Policy. 


Your profile



  • Admissions to the doctoral program requires a University Degree (M.A., Diplom, Magister, or equivalent) in Political Science/International Relations or a related discipline with a minimum grade point average of 5.0 for graduates of Swiss institutions, or 2.0 for German degrees, or the equivalent in respective third countries

  • General expertise in International Relations Theories and a related field of specialization, such as Security Studies, International Organization, International Political Economy, etc.

  • Excellent written and spoken German and English language skills.

  • Motivation to pursue an academic career and interest in theory-driven research.

  • Ability to develop your research project and work independently.

The Institute of Political Science (IPW) is an internationally active institute at a renowned university. The Department's doctoral programme offers advanced methodological and substantive training as well as professional development.



We offer a contract for an initial three-year term (with the possibility of a two-year extension). Applications consisting of a CV, a letter of motivation, transcripts with grades, a short exposé (approx. 3 pages) of a possible dissertation topic, a copy of their MA thesis, and the names of two references should be submitted electronically.



The application deadline is 15th November 2020. Interviews are expected to be held in February 2021.
