Senior Director, TA Lead Pipeline, International Region (BIR)

Job Description

The owner of this role will be responsible for leading and representing BIR for Biogen’s portfolio with a focus on country-specific needs and opportunities for the medical function. 


Strategic leadership



  1. Together with the TA Head Pipeline Global Medical and the Regional VP, and Global Medical Program Lead, Medical BIR defines medical strategy for the region and across all the Pipeline TA portfolio products. Proactive participation in BIR Medical LT, Global Pipeline TA LT & Pipeline Global leads for OPH and early Pipeline programs, to ensure complete strategic alignment between these forums/leads.

  2. Together with Global Medical lead and other stakeholders drives integrated ICP process (3M) for the region and ensures timely execution of medical launch preparation/strategy.

  3. Works closely with the Global leads for the Pipeline TA and the regional VP to ensure input into key clinical trial considerations for affiliate market and ensure clear input from regional local affiliates on medical need and market consideration

  4. Aligns with BIR Commercial & Value & Access on strategy and works cross-functionally with key internal and external stakeholders and partner functions to address the unmet medical needs in the BIR market. Builds an understanding of market dynamics, trends, business priorities in order to adapt strategic approach and coms accordingly.

  5. Supervises development and implementation of regional BIR medical plans, partnering with the BIR leadership team (senior management) across functions to define, establish and execute a coherent launch and strategic plan that addresses patient needs; will influence decisions and impacts business direction.

  6. Works closely with the Global pipeline lead to ensure input into data generation strategy and planning (phase IV studies, Real World Evidence data generation, IITs and SRAs). As programs approach launch, the BIR Pipeline Lead is the key driver for generating the relevant data to advance and drive/inform clinical practice and support market access at the regional level.

  7. Ensures full alignment of BIR affiliate tactics with global/regional launch strategy and participates in local business reviews as needed. Motivates BIR affiliate support of global MPT structure and activities as well as regional/local MPT follow-up.

  8. In partnership with the Global Medical Leads, ensures addressing of strategic regional needs across full spectrum of Global Medical resources, activities & involvement e.g. PDCs, Regulatory, SciComms, MedEd, Internal Training and participates in respective forums alongside Global leads for TA pipeline (OPH and early pipeline) when needed.

  9. Partners and collaborates with Value & Access teams and Global Medical Leads to assist company efforts to show potential medical value of compounds to payers, HCPs and regulators.

  10. With global medical leads, contributes to development and management of access programs.

  11. Highly focused on building advocacy across the region through KME engagements leveraging in-house SMEs and local-global collaborations.

  12. Facilitates sharing of best practices and knowledge across products and locations and ensure comprehensive regional inclusion in global training activities.


External liaison



  1. Participates in high quality Key Medical Expert engagement across the region to ensure access to high quality external expertise and insights.

  2. Contributes to availability of high value-added continuous medical educational programs across all products and therapeutic areas for external stakeholders in collaboration with Global MedEd group and the Global Medical Lead.

  3. Provides guidance to affiliates / partners on pre-launch and launch readiness in alignment with global medical lead.

  4. Stakeholder engagements w/ local authorities for registration / reimbursement discussions


Internal liaison



  1. Educate the organization about the region and its medical needs, challenges, and opportunities.

  2. Advocate for the region and provide medical perspective and knowledge to other teams within the region.

  3. Attract talent from other parts of the organization, model each of the BIIB elements and foster a culture of high performance.

  4. Be a strong partner for the Global lead of pipeline programs

  5. Drive capability building across affiliates and with the partners.

  6. Model cross-functional collaboration and alignment.


 


Qualifications



  • Min 8+ years’ experience within a medical affairs role in Pharmaceutical industry, prior experience in launching new products, managing emerging markets, alliances and partners preferred.

  • Ability to communicate and work in English 

  • Minimum 5 years experience of working in highly culturally-diverse international environment.

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of disease area, multiple different health care systems/market dynamics, regulations, policies and SOPs, health economic techniques and trends 

  • Broad experience in interaction with health authorities 

  • Demonstrated strategic approach to implementation of scientific communication programs on disease areas and treatments. 

  • Has demonstrated leadership skills and acquired knowledge and skills/competencies to the degree expected at job level 

  • MD, PhD (Life Sciences) or Pharm D qualification
