IT'IS Foundation for Research on Information Technologies in Society, ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) Zurich

The IT'IS Foundation is an independent non-profit research organization dedicated to improving and advancing the quality of people’s lives through enhancing the safety and quality of emerging electromagnetic (EM) technologies. The Foundation’s primary activities include computational EM in complex environments, computational life sciences (CLS) applied to devices in and around the human body, and the development of medical image-based, high-resolution computable whole-body anatomical models.

Description:

The available position is for a PhD student in the field of dielectric spectroscopy. This is a joint position between the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET) of the ETH Zurich and the IT’IS Foundation.

The ability to precisely and reliably measure dielectric properties is becoming increasingly important in many research fields and industry applications as new technologies are developed and new markets emerge. In the medical sector, device development based on EM technologies relies on precise measures of dielectric parameters of the various human tissues involved. The optimal and safe design of wireless charging appliances for phones, cars, and other devices requires information on the dielectric features of the corresponding materials. Microwave circuit and antenna performance also depends on accurate knowledge of the dielectric properties of the substrate.

This post offers the opportunity to contribute to the important field of EM technology and material characterization. The main tasks associated with this position are:

  • research on novel methods for the measurement of permittivity and permeability across the entire EM spectrum from low frequency to THz fields

  • development of feasibility prototypes, documentation, etc.

Education:

We are seeking a talented and ambitious candidate with the following attributes:

  • MSc degree in electrical engineering or physics

  • Good working knowledge of Python and/or MATLAB

  • Good background in numerical and experimental methods in EM and/or characterization of materials

  • Reliability, self-motivation, good organization skills, and ability to handle irregular workloads

  • Excellent ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent command of the English language

Beginning:
As soon as possible.
Application Process:

Applications should consist of:

  • Cover letter including the position title and a statement addressing the selection criteria and outlining the motivation for applying for the position

  • Detailed CV

  • Copies of degree certificates and/or diplomas, including grades

  • Letters of recommendation
