OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The mission of WHO's Health Emergencies Programme (The Programme) is to build the capacity of Member States to manage health emergency risks and, when national capacities are overwhelmed, to lead and coordinate the international health response to contain outbreaks and to provide effective relief and recovery to affected populations.
The Department of Global Infectious Hazards Preparedness (GIH) advances global efforts to prevent and control existing and emerging infectious diseases by increasing access to evidence-based interventions; fostering impactful innovation; and leveraging technical, operational and strategic partnerships. The department ofGlobal Infectious Hazards Preparednessis committed to delivering GPW13 Outcome 2.2 Epidemics and pandemics prevented, through: Delivering risk assessment, technical guidance, interventions and control strategies for country impact; Promoting innovation and adoption of new technologies; Aligning and coordinating international action through trustedpartnership; Ensuring vulnerable populations have access to life-saving interventions and supplies.
The IPR team strengthens global seasonal influenza prevention and control and preparedness for future pandemics and facilitates work to improve global tools to prevent and treat the disease by promoting vaccine research and innovation. IPR also supports overall implementation of the global influenza strategy including building better global capacity through development of strategies, guidance, global mechanisms and interventions to address influenza and other respiratory pathogens responsible for epidemics or pandemics thereby reducing their impact on affected populations and limiting their international spread.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Within the framework of the delegated authority, the incumbent supports overall management of the Country Readiness and Delivery team by providing overall support to the co-leads of the country readiness workstream pillar1.
The incumbent is assigned all or part of the following responsabilities:
1. Collaborate with the three co-leads and all the workgroup team leads to manage and support coordination, implementation and monitoring of the overall workplans and track accomplishments and activities of the Country Readiness and Delivery workstream.
2. Support reporting for the pillar and workstream by developing, preparing and submitting routine and ad hoc reports, briefings, budget proposals and updates for the Country Readiness and Delivery workstream as needed.
3. In addition to managing the overall all workstream, serve as lead for the Communications, Advocacy and Training working group to support the development of preparedness capacity in countries for preparing for COVID-19 vaccination.
4. Support overall coordination and logistical aspects of the teams by developing a team organization workspace for sharing of documents and materials and support meetings through attendance, especially for preparation and coordination of agendas, sharing notes, and actions items with the overall management team.
5. Provide technical input to counterparts in countries (through WHO regional and country offices) to support implementation and strengthening of emergency Covid vaccination programmes.
6. Participate in operational reviews.
7. Review lessons learned and best practices from the Covid emergency response to contribute to the evidence base on the potential role of influenza vaccination for pandemic preparedness.
8. Welcome opportunities to support multi-disciplinary, cross-cutting approaches to work as required to facilitate participation in such approaches and deploy for assignments upon request to support the program as needed.
9. Perform other related duties including replacing and backstopping as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Essential: A first level university degree from a recognized university in public health, global health, international development or policy or a related field.
Desirable: An advanced university degree (Masters level or above) in public health, health policy or epidemiology.
Experience
Essential:
At least 5 years of relevant experience in global health on topics regarding vaccination, program implementation or other public health issues and policies at national and international levels.
Desirable:
Exposure at the international level. Experience in WHO to have an understanding of its mandate, goals and practices as related to the work or experience in UN or an international institution in similar functions.
Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of influenza vaccination programmes and evaluation activities complemented by a sound knowledge of health policy and health security and preparedness, especially as they relate to influenza.

REMUNERATION
WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 60,962 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 4425 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
