With Steer-By-Wire, the mechanical linkage between steering wheel and steering gear is removed. Instead electrical signals alter the movement of the steering rack.
Since this system can be fully mechanically decoupled, then, from the driver’s perspective, the steering wheel may be substituted by some advanced driver–vehicle interface, for instance, a joystick.
The goal of the thesis is to implement a joystick into the Roding test vehicle as an alternative steering input device and investigate such as evaluate the following aspects/elements in stand-still and on a test track:
• Controllability of the car (lane tracking performance, cornering performance)
• Steering feel performance
• Joystick’s impact on driver’s safety
It is intended to assess and possibly reverse-engineer an automative approved joystick device to acquire its functionalities and performance. On these findings, the thyssenkrupp Presta Sbw steering wheel torque controller should be adapted for the joystick use, which will accompanied with corresponding adaptions.
