The Institute for Infectious Diseases (IFIK), University of Bern is seeking a highly qualified and experienced staff bioinformatician to perform routine genomic and metagenomic analyses of microbial pathogens of clinical importance, and biostatistical analyses of metadata. The new collaborator will be embedded in the Bioinformatics and Biostatistics group at IFIK.

We seek

Essential qualifications include

  • Postgraduate degree in bioinformatics or related field (MSc as minimal qualification)

  • Relevant work experience in omics and NGS data analysis: amplicon sequencing, whole genome sequencing, metagenomics/transcriptomics

  • Advanced use of statistical analysis including multivariate data analysis, power analysis calculations, machine learning algorithms applied to biological questions

  • At least 2 years relevant work experience with Unix (Linux) systems, including installation and troubleshooting of software

  • Advanced scripting skills (e.g., Python/Perl, bash, R/Bioconductor)

  • Excellent communication, teamwork and organizational skills

  • Spoken and written fluency in German and English

The following qualifications are advantageous

  • Background in microbiology, diversity analysis, phylogenetics, phylogenomics, or related fields

  • Experience in service-oriented research

  • Experience in clinical or medical working environment

  • Background in a mathematical/statistical field with further education in (micro)biology

The salary will be based on the University of Bern's system (salary and social insurance).



Percentage of salary: 100%
