Senior Scientist of Biocatalysis
As a Senior Scientist of Biocatalyis in Catalysis & Flow Reactions (C&FR) you will be working in the Process Chemistry & Catalysis (PTDC-C) department within the Synthetic Molecules Technical Development (PTDC) organization.
Behind every product sold by Roche is the strong involvement of Pharma Global Technical Operations (PT). Starting with Phase I of the clinical development process and continuing through to product maturity, PT makes medicines at sites around the world and includes more than 12000 employees worldwide.
Global Technical Development (PTD) is an organization within PT of over two thousand people globally that are integral for the mission of Roche to develop new, efficacious medicines for patients. Therefore, PTD actively collaborates and develops innovative technical solutions to bridge early-stage, late-stage and commercial product needs. The mandate of this unit is to reliably deliver the pipeline and supply quality products to patients. The unit excels in its work through innovation, collaboration, dedication, and mutual respect and adds value every day, continuously improving what it does.
Synthetic Molecules Technical Development (PTDC) within the PTD unit brings a broad range of experience across drug substance (DS), drug product (DP), analytical sciences and manufacturing science & technology, and collaborates closely with key partners in the departments Research and Early Development (pRED / gRED), commercial manufacturing and PTD. PTDC is responsible for technical development of our synthetic molecules pipeline, manufacture of DS and DP for clinical studies and ultimately transfer of the intended commercial processes to the launch site.
In the Process Chemistry & Catalysis department, we design and develop robust and cost effective Drug Substance processes using state of the art science and methodologies and the external workbench to deliver the company’s portfolio of small molecules from entry into human through transfer to commercial manufacturing, including optimal support for regulatory submissions. The core tasks of C&FR are the identification and development of a) enzymatic transformations for DS intermediates and metabolites, b) heterogeneous and homogeneous metal catalyzed processes as well as service hydrogenations and c) continuous reaction processes.
The Position
Your main responsibility is to establish efficient biocatalytic processes in a timely manner to deliver fit-for-purpose processes for discovery chemistry and early stage projects as well as to support project teams by delivering robust biocatalytical processes to enable clinical study supplies and support validation and registration campaigns to allow for seemless market introductions.
You will closely collaborate with scientists & associates allocated to your projects and interdisciplinary team members, your line management and our customers from Medicinal Chemistry and earyl R&D to drive our portfolio.
Within PTDC, you will lead research and development projects as well as cross-functional projects as part time role.
You are actively contributing to the realization of the C&FR teams Vision (globally recognized, top ranked catalysis group in Pharma industry with core expertise in flow chemistry) & Mission (to support our pipeline projects most effectively).
Who are you
You hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, biocatalysis or an adequate qualification with at least 10 years of research/process experience in the field of biocatalysis – thereof a minimum of 5 years experience in the pharmaceutical, flagrance or fine chemical industry.
Candidates must possess a deep expertise in the application of biocatalytic transformations for chemical process development, the principles that govern them, as well as knowledge about the external landscape, emerging biocatalytic technologies and a strong network in the biocatalysis community.
Of equal importance is a strong background in the theory and practice of synthetic organic chemistry, a good command of molecular biology, possess excellent problem solving skills, and demonstrate a thorough understanding of synthetic methods and reaction mechanisms is desired.
Also, a record of achievements in biocatalytic process development and a demonstrated ability to perform assigned tasks through rigorous data collection and applying analytical tests and instrumentation in the laboratory. Must have expertise in the purification and characterization of organic compounds (i.e. HPLC, NMR, MS, and IR). Expert knowledge in high throughput experimentation, state-of-the-art data gathering, mining and vizualitzation techniques is a plus.
Good oral and written communication skills and an ability to work in a collaborative team environment with a diverse group of stakeholders across disciplines, both internal and external, is required.
You are fluent in English and have or are willing to acquire a very good command of German
