About the Basel Institute on Governance / International Centre for Asset Recovery
The Basel Institute on Governance is an international and independent not-for-profit
organisation working worldwide with the public and private sector to counter corruption and
other financial crimes and to improve the quality of governance. Registered as a Swiss
foundation with headquarters in Basel, the Institute operates globally and maintains field
operations in Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America. The Basel Institute is an
Associated Institute of the University of Basel.


Within the Basel Institute, the International Centre for Asset Recovery (ICAR) is a specialist
centre dedicated to supporting affected countries in recovering stolen assets through
capacity building and technical assistance initiatives, including strategic case advice, and by
contributing to the international policy dialogue on standard setting in asset recovery.
Position
The Junior Legal Researcher will predominantly assist ICAR staff through desk-based
research into asset recovery-related issues, including the identification and summation of
legislation, case law and academic papers relevant to ongoing ICAR projects.


The Junior Legal Researcher will work in collaboration with, and fall under the supervision
of, a HQ-based Asset Recovery Specialist at ICAR. S/he will work with and report to other
ICAR staff members on a task-by-task basis as designated by the Asset Recovery
Specialist.
Responsibilities



  • Conduct desk-based research into asset recovery-related issues

  • Draft asset recovery-related documents based on research findings

  • Assist with tasks related to ICAR publications

  • Assist with other tasks as may be required by other divisions of the Basel Institute

Qualifications



  • At the minimum a bachelor’s degree in law

  • Excellent writing skills

  • Strong English speaking and communication skills

  • At least one other language: French, Spanish or Portuguese
