Science and Innovation Department DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



Under the overall guidance of the Director of the Science and Innovation (D/SI), the incumbent will perform the following duties:



(a) Support the Research Board (RB) and the Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) through scientific editing of reports and papers; drafting meeting reports, synthesis/summaries, produces figures and presentations, literature search;

(b) Support RB and its task teams scientifically and organisationally;

(c) Support the WMO's Research Strategy on Hydrology in close coordination with the RB, the Hydrological Coordination Panel, the WMO Infrastructure and Services Commissions as well as partners/organizations;

(d) Assist the research programmes with their contributions to RB and SAP, contributions and reporting to the WMO constituent bodies and relevant external bodies, events and processes as required; assist with the production of the United in Science Report and other reports led by the Department;

(e) Assist the research programmes in cross-coordination activities with the Infrastructure Commission (INFCOM) (e.g. development of Seamless Global Data-processing and Forecasting System (S/GDPFS) pilot projects) and the Services Commission (SERCOM) (Science for Services, Aviation, etc.);

(f) Assist in the organization of a joint open science conference in 2025 including communities of WMO, the International Science Council (ISC), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) (including the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)), other organizations, the private sector, academia with an emphasis on the 'science for service' thinking and for a better integration across the weather, climate, water and environment;

(g) Coordination of weather and climate extreme related research activities across research programmes;

(h) Liaison with other world programs including Future Earth and Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) on subjects and activities related to weather and climate extremes (e.g. Knowledge Action Network on Emergent Risks and Extreme Events (RISK-KAN));

(i) Support the outreach activities of the Department and the research programmes, including regular update of the related WMO web page on the community platform, departmental newsletter, contribution to WMO strategic communications and other publications; apply modern visualisation, graphical design and advanced communication techniques and tools;

(j) Support monitoring and evaluation of Department activities included in the WMO Operating Plan; update and maintain the Research Expert Network;

(k) Carry out other relevant duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS



Education

Master's degree or equivalent in Weather Science or a related field (Earth System Science, Meteorology, Oceanography, Climatology, Hydrology). A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.



Experience

A minimum of five years of combined national and international progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area. Formal qualification or equivalent experience in scientific communication, knowledge brokering and stakeholder engagement. Experience with the United Nations system would be an advantage. Experience writing reports, documents and correspondence. Maturity of judgement, initiative and tact. Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Maturity of judgement, initiative and creativity. Excellent analytical, communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Languages

Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.
