PhD position Laser Micromachining of PolymersSchool of Engineering FHNW, Institute of Polymer NanotechnologyWhether you are a generalist, researcher or specialist - develop yourself with usYour tasksAt the Institute Polymer Nanotechnology (INKA) we are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic PhD student in the field of laser micromachining of polymers. The PhD will be carried out in close collaboration with the Institute of Product and Production Engineering (IPPE) at FHNW, is embedded in the H2020 Marie Curie network project SIMPPER_MedDev (project ESR7) and officially enrolled at University College Dublin.

  • Using different ultrashort pulse laser sources, you will investigate the ablation physics of polymers in detail to enable the development of suitable technologies for texturing transparent polymers with high surface quality

  • For this purpose, you will develop the fundamental understanding of process influencing variables, chemical and physical relationships and interactions to master and further develop laser micromachining of amorphous thermoplastics

  • You will analyze laser micromachining of high performance polymers to produce prototype tools for injection molding or hot stamping of functional samples

Your profileYou have a very good degree in mechanical engineering, materials science or plastics engineering with a strong flair for microstructured surfaces. You have a lot of initiative for working in a scientifically exciting and application-oriented environment, are creative and open-minded. In addition, you bring the following:

  • solid background in plastics engineering with hands-on experience in plastics processing and characterization

  • hands-on laboratory experience in the field of laser micromachining using ultrashort pulse lasers (ps, fs)

  • knowledge of functional surface structures and surface analysis with plastics is desirable

  • experience in project management is desired

  • fluent English (project-related communication), both written and spoken, is a prerequisite

  • German language skills (working language) are desirable, but not mandatory

  • independent working style, ability to work in a team and enthusiasm complete your profile
